What is happening in Barrow County

Week of 1 October 2026. This page gets rewritten every week with what is actually happening in Barrow County. Everything here was checked against a real source, and anything I could not confirm is left off rather than guessed at.

The things that happen every week, library storytimes, trivia night, the farmers market, live on the weekly calendar so this page can stay short.

This week

Friday, October 2

Reynolds Bend ribbon cutting, 142 Gathering Court, Bethlehem, 11 a.m. to noon. The chamber is cutting the ribbon on a new rental home community off the 316 corridor. Worth a stop if you want to see what is going up on that side of the county. Free.

Apalachee vs Habersham Central, Apalachee High School, 940 Haymon Morris Road, Winder, 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats host Habersham Central in a Region 8 game. Tickets go through the district’s online system.

Also Friday night, Winder-Barrow travels to North Oconee in Bogart, also at 7:30.

Saturday, October 3

Rocktoberfest with Dwight Leon, Finished Goods Brew Werks, 56 East Candler Street, Winder, 7 to 10 p.m. Live rock plus their Oktoberfest beers, with Smokin’ Po Boys outside. No cover listed.

Monday, October 5

Family Game Day, Winder Public Library, 1 to 3 p.m. A fall break drop-in with every board game in the building out on the tables, Candy Land through Uno. Come any time in that window. All ages with a caregiver. Free.

Tuesday, October 6

Teen Crafts: Artful Pages, Winder Public Library, 5 to 6 p.m. Teens make sprayed book edges, and you can bring your own book to do it to. Ages 12 to 18, while supplies last. Free.

Wednesday, October 7

The Hike Story Stroll opens at Legacy Park, Winder, up from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. An outdoor walking story: Alison Farrell’s picture book The Hike is posted along the path so kids read it as they walk. It runs through October 29, so there is no rush. Free.

Story Stroll kickoff, Winder Public Library, 10 to 11 a.m. Nature walk activities inside, a planting project with Miss Suzanne from Wimberly’s Roots, then everyone walks over to Legacy Park for the stroll itself. All ages. Free.

Worth knowing

Barrow County schools are on fall break October 5 through 9. Expect daytime crowds at the library and the park, and quiet school zones.

Winder City Council has a work session Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m. at the Winder Community Center, 113 East Athens Street, and the regular meeting Tuesday, October 6 at 6 p.m. in the same place. Both are open to the public.

The Board of Commissioners does not meet this week. Their October dates are the 13th and the 27th, 5 and 6 p.m., in the Commissioner Meeting Room at the Historic Courthouse, 30 North Broad Street. Public hearings happen at the second Tuesday meeting.

A $4.3 million roundabout is coming to US 29 Business, SR 8 and SR 53 at Jackson Trail Road. Georgia DOT has awarded the contract and it comes with an 18 month detour. The completion date on paper is 31 October 2028. Worth knowing now, because the detour will reshape that drive.

Victor Lord Park is getting the county’s first public outdoor basketball and futsal courts. Commissioners approved a $127,592 SPLOST funded contract to convert the tennis courts into two full size basketball courts overlaid with two futsal courts, plus four commercial grade goals and new fencing. No start date announced.

Election day is November 3, with federal, state and local races on the Barrow County ballot.

Coming up

Spooktacular takes over downtown Winder on Friday, October 23 from 5 to 9 p.m. Trick-or-treating through downtown, a stage at Jug Tavern Park, hayrides, costume contests and food trucks. It is the biggest night of the Barrow County fall.

Fort Yargo this week

No scheduled programs, which is worth saying plainly, because it means the park is just the park. With schools out October 5 through 9, that may be the better deal anyway. Hours and what is there are on the weekly calendar.

Did I miss something?

Almost certainly. If you are running something in Barrow County and it is not here, tell me and it goes on next week’s page. There is no charge for that and there never will be. This page is better when people send things in.
