About Barrow / Is Braselton in Barrow County?
Partly, yes. Braselton is one town that sits in four different counties at the same time, and Barrow is one of them. So whether you are in Barrow County depends on which part of Braselton you are standing in.
That is a real answer, not a dodge. The town says so itself: Braselton is located in Jackson, Barrow, Gwinnett and Hall counties. Four county governments, one town.
Braselton is a town. Barrow County is a county. They overlap, and neither one contains the other.
The Barrow County Chamber of Commerce counts Braselton as one of the county’s six cities, alongside Winder, Auburn, Bethlehem, Carl and Statham. So if you live in the Barrow County part of Braselton, you are a Braselton resident and a Barrow County resident at the same time, and both of those are ordinary true statements.
But the town governs itself from outside Barrow County, and three other county governments have a claim on the rest of it. Your county decides your taxes, your schools, your sheriff and your ballot. Your town decides your town. Those are two different questions and around here people answer them as if they were one.
Because Braselton grew, and county lines did not.
The town was a small place built around a crossroads, and it has expanded by annexing land outward from there. It went from about seven square miles to its current size that way. Annexation follows property owners asking to come in, and property owners do not stop at the county line, so the town crossed into Gwinnett, into Hall, and into Barrow.
The 2020 census counted 13,403 people in Braselton. The Chamber puts it higher now. Either way it is not the same town it was, and the boundary you are picturing is probably a boundary from twenty years ago.
There are four ZIP codes in play too: 30517, 30519, 30542 and 30548. That last one is the Hoschton ZIP, which is its own separate piece of confusion.
This is the comparison worth making, because the two get muddled constantly and the answers are genuinely opposite.
Hoschton is a Jackson County city. It is not one of Barrow County’s municipalities. The only reason people think it might be is the 30548 ZIP code, which covers parts of four counties. If you are inside Hoschton city limits, you are in Jackson County, full stop. I wrote the long version at is Hoschton in Barrow County.
Braselton genuinely is partly in Barrow County. Not by ZIP code accident. By town limits. The town itself lies in four counties and Barrow is one of them.
So: a Hoschton mailing address might put you in Barrow County by accident of the post office. A Braselton address might put you in Barrow County because the town actually extends there. Different causes, and the second one is the one that is real.
Your county school system, not your town.
Braselton has portions in four counties and those portions are served by different school districts. A Braselton address does not tell you which. Only your county does, and inside your county, only your attendance zone does.
If your property is in Barrow County, the Barrow County School System is your district. Call them with your address before you assume anything. Attendance zones move, they are redrawn as schools fill, and a county line is not the same thing as a school zone. I am not going to tell you which school your child is zoned for, because anyone who tells you that from a web page is guessing.
Look up the parcel, not the address. It takes about two minutes and it is the only method that actually settles it.
Start with the Barrow County GIS map at barrowga.org/526/GIS. Find your property. If Barrow County has a parcel record for it, you are in Barrow County. If it is not there, you are not.
Or check the tax assessor. The Barrow County Assessor holds the property records. A parcel number and an assessment means Barrow County.
The check that never lies: look at your property tax bill. Whichever county sent it is your county. That is the whole test.
If Barrow has no record of your property, try Jackson, Gwinnett or Hall. One of the four has it.
Braselton is in four counties at once: Jackson, Barrow, Gwinnett and Hall. The town says so itself. Which one applies to you depends on where in Braselton your property sits, and your county is the one that has a tax record for your parcel.
Yes. The Barrow County Chamber of Commerce lists Braselton as one of the county’s six cities, along with Winder, Auburn, Bethlehem, Carl and Statham. That is different from Hoschton, which is a Jackson County city and is not one of the six.
By annexing outward. Braselton grew from about seven square miles by taking in land as property owners asked to join, and that expansion crossed county lines. Town limits and county lines are drawn by different governments for different reasons and nothing requires them to match.
Some do and some do not. The town’s four portions are served by different school districts, so your county decides your district and your attendance zone decides your school. If your property is in Barrow County, the Barrow County School System is your district. Call them with your address rather than assuming.
No, and the county answer is different for each. Braselton is a town in four counties, one of which is Barrow. Hoschton is a city in Jackson County whose ZIP code reaches into three other counties. Braselton is partly in Barrow by town limits. A Hoschton address is only ever in Barrow by accident of the mail route.
I write About Barrow. I grew up on a Hoschton mailing address that sat on Barrow County land and I graduated from Winder Barrow High School, so I have spent a lot of my life on the wrong side of exactly this question.
